DepED Manila through the Guidance Services conducted a Child Protection Policy Seminar on August 23, 2012 at P. Gomez Elementary School. The whole day seminar was attended by elementary and secondary school principals with their guidance counselors. Some private school principals, headed by Mr. Efren Dieta, also participated in the activity.
Atty. Antonio Casangkapan, legal officer of DepEd Manila, talked about RA 9344 (An Act Establishing a Comprehensive Juvenile Justice and Welfare System ). Dr. Arnulfo Empleo, principal of Tondo High School and President of NAPPSHI (National Association of Principals of Philippine Secondary Schools) discussed the provisions contained in DepED's Child Protection Policy). Better interventions and actions on handling school and student problems was the topic of Ms. Laura Macalinao, principal of Calderon High School and Coordinator of Values Education. The Protocol on Referring and Reporting Child Abuse was discussed by the representative of MDSW Chief, Mr. Jay dela Fuente.
With the Seminar on Child Protection Policy, DepED Manila hopes to provide school heads and counselors the needed capability for providing a safe school environment for its learners and the needed guidance for addressing child abuse cases.
